I thought the introduction of the letter in the beginning of the story was powerful and touching. Although Liza and Annie are seventeen years old they are very much like children, especially Annie. Evaluation: I found Annie on My Mind to be a poignant story about the struggles of being young and falling in love with a person of the same sex. I think what I liked most about it was the way Liza kept saying Annie's name. And scoff if you must but The Hunger Games would be a fiendishly perfect assignment for 6th or 7th, maybe 8th grade even. The beginning of Nancy Garden's book, Annie on My Mind, as it describes the first hesitant contact between the two girls, is a real enchantment. Nancy Garden's Annie on My Mind was originally published in 1982, and it was one of the first YA novels to portray gay characters in a positive light. One of my all-time favorite banned books and one I would take with me if I was stuck in an underground bunker as the zombie apocalypse occurred is Nancy Garden's 1982 YA novel, Annie on my Mind. It could replace The Giver in the curriculum.
